How He Shall Grant the Desires of Your Heart – How He is Granting Mine – Psalm 37:4

Psalm 37:4 (New King James Version) Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

It was when I was twelve years of age that I first discovered what the desire of my heart was when it came to what I wanted to do with my life. We were down at the airport and there were about thirty people from church seeing off six people, that were going to go to a two week outreach to little towns in outback Australia. They were going to share Jesus Christ with the people of those towns in churches, where the churches were advertising the evangelistic outreaches in their little towns.

I wanted with all of my heart to get onto that plane and I was not silent about it. My shepherd at that time came and put his arm around my shoulder as I was in tears and said, “You can’t go on that plane today Matthew. But one day when you are ready Jesus is going to have a whole lot of people down at an airport to see you off, as you go off to preach the gospel.”

Well folks that was twenty seven years ago and still I have not been down the airport with a church full of people seeing me off, though once last year I went and preached in India. I am hoping that this prophecy is getting close, as the Lord has indicated that within six months I will be preaching on a bit of a regular basis in churches.

It’s a long time to wait for your desire, and yet ten weeks ago as of writing, Jesus led me to this online magazine, and in articles on Mental illness, and in articles on divorce, I have been able to share my faith with people that do not know the Lord.

I also share my faith in Sydney through prophetic evangelism where God will give me a message for a non Christian and I am able to approach a total stranger, and bless them with good news about what God is going to do with something they are worrying about. God loves using me like an angel delivering messages, and it is one of my favourite past times witnessing like this.

I have also done six months preaching with a band on the streets of Sydney and that was great fun, until God called me to attend a church on the same night, and go and share my faith each week for five minutes on the microphone.

When all you want to do is preach, it makes it pretty hard to wait for twenty seven years. Yet I have to admit that 20 of those years I was not walking with the Lord, as I had a bad sexual addiction to the women of the night, and this guilt kept me out of church like sin so often keeps sinners from church.

The first step and the step that is in the passage above is for us to take delight in the Lord. This is more then going to church each week, it’s more then going to Bible studies, it’s more then singing and saying that you love Jesus each week. It’s departing from sin.

1 Corinthians 15:34 (New King James Version) 34 Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

If we really are sorry about any sin we are doing, and we are sick and tired of hurting God with it in our lives as often as we do it, we can fast and pray and plead the Lord to take it from us with many tears of true repentance, and He will grant us the grace, and give us His strength to overcome the temptation, and grant us a crown in that area of our life.

James 1:12 (New King James Version)

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Titus 2:11-14 (New King James Version)

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great Request personal prophetic word God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

The grace or the power of God that God will give us, will give us the extra power when the temptations come and the more we obey and do not act out in our sin, the habit will be broken faster and then it will be on to the next area of our life that is in sin.

The Bible promises us that we can be free of all sinful habits and it says confession and true repentance is the key.

1 John 1:9 (New King James Version) 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Delighting ourselves in the Lord is loving Jesus, and loving Jesus is simply obeying Jesus and His fifty commands in the Bible. It’s not simple to obey the fifty commands, but it is the only way to love Jesus. He said so four times between the last supper and the garden.

John 14:15 (New King James Version) 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

John 14:21 (New King James Version) 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

John 14:23-24 (New King James Version) 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

John 15:10 (New King James Version) 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

But how can you do everything Jesus taught you that you have to do?

Philippians 4:13 (New King James Version) 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

You can have an idea of what God wants you to do and your desire will often meet with that. So many people want to know what God’s will is in their life. That is pretty simple. It is most often something that they would really like to do for God. If you’d like to preach for God, take the time to learn the Word and apply the Word in your own life, and build up some testimony so that you can illustrate your sermons with testimony.

For twenty years I had a habit of sleeping with harlots and it was hard to break that habit. The breaking came when I came to see it God’s way, and how I was hurting His Holy Spirit within me, I was hurting the girl that I was doing it to, and I was hurting myself for degrading myself, and paying a girl for unhealthy comforting, and sex which was fornication. It was not until I really was sorry, and disgusted with my sin that my fasting and prayers and tears brought down the grace of God, so that He was able to lift a demon of lust off my life and take away the compulsion to give into the temptation.

So I am no saint and I could never preach online here or on pulpits in the future, in the knowledge that some of the love offerings were going to be spent on a harlot.

God knows your future and He will plant a desire deep in your heart. Maybe that is for missions, you might want to save up the money and go on a short term mission trip and get a taste for missions. When you have been on the mission field, you will get a burning desire to be there full time and return to prepare yourself.

Then you have to seek wise and Godly counsel from the people that would know the answers, on what sort of preparation you would need to get to that desire. You have to put in the years and the years of time to get all the skills, and the long time it may take is going to be good for your character. Be careful not to be anxious about your dream.

Philippians 4:6-7 (New King James Version) 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The harder the work and the more anointing you will need, the more time that the Lord will spend in training you. You have to leave the world and its pursuits behind. You have to give up money and possession and cars and good clothes to get something of real value. If your focus is on doing the Lord’s work you have to not be distracted with the things of the world.

2 Timothy 2:4 (New King James Version) 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

Soldiers wear a uniform and do not do a nine to five job and live in the community. They leave their families and live at war and serve the country that they serve. The family makes the sacrifice, and the wife and children miss the man but he does come home after war, and is able to have some sort of time with them. So too, if you are going to be a speaker for the Lord, you have to be prepared to leave a wife and child behind. An evangelist, prophet and apostle in the five fold ministry has to be away from home at least half of the year going to towns and cities to bring people closer to God, and a deeper walk with God.

But the time of preparation has to be endured, and like a farmer there is a time between when you sow the seed and when it matures.

2 Timothy 2:6 (New King James Version) 6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.

Of course the farmer also is the one that gets the reward, and so the full time worker for the Lord is the one that gets a blessing from the preaching of the Word. But this reward is not just money as many people might think. This reward is the fact that in preparing sermons the teacher is taught by the Holy Spirit, deeper meanings, and by preaching the Word the preacher hears the Word of God, and by hearing the Word his own faith is activated. He also has the reward when the fruit of the crop comes in as souls are saved, or as a prophet when he returns to a town he preached in for a week. He sees many of the people’s lives richer and more fruit laden, and he sees the evidence of his labour.

The farmer is proud of his crop, and a good farmer will always take care to look after his soil. In this we can see that the most important factor in the preachers life is his own walk with God, and the time he spends in the Word and in prayer, the more revelation he gets and the richer his walk with God is. When a man’s life is rich and fulfilled in God alone, and his pure delight is in doing the Lords will, it will not be long till he see his greatest desires come true.

So you have to compete in the Christian race by applying the rules. Any person can cheat in a race and not run by the rules. It is easy sometimes to cheat in a game of cards, or at school, but we all know cheating only hurts us. If we want to be blessed by God we need to be running the race by the rules. At least half an hour in prayer each day and half an hour after that in the Word, and tithing 10% of our income are the rules of the basic beginners run in the race.

2 Timothy 2:5 (New King James Version) 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

Don’t think you can disobey the commands of Jesus each week, not pay a 10% tithe to your church, not pray each day, and not read the Word each day and have an active faith and a fruit bearing life. You need to discipline yourself and be a soldier, and come out of the world and the sinful ways most people behave. If you want to serve God and preach in the future you have to be a man or woman of discipline. No great preacher changed the world with a lazy attitude, and many good preachers lose sleep in the middle of the night.

We need to die to our own time and give it to the Lord. We have to deny our want for possessions, and make do with average stuff, and spend our money for the Lord until He chose to prosper us. We need to put in all the time to prepare, and endure the long wait to be called into active duty. We have to obey Him and change and repent and not deny Him in anything He asks. And when tough times come, we have to not shy away from the call on our life, or sin by lack of faith, but we have to stand faithful to Him that He will bring us through.
